Wales Rally GB stands as one of Mads Østbergs best rallies overall, where he won a stage and became number four overall.
During recce in Wales Mads Østberg and co-driver Jonas Andersson changed the pacenotes for the whole event, except one stage. That was a smart move. And on Saturdays first stage the duo claimed their first stage win on gravel since the Acropolis Rally of 2009.
– This has been a good event for us for sure. I’m really happy with the speed we have had this weekend. I think we started off well and were able to keep that speed throughout the whole event, which was good, Østberg says.
The duo in their Ford Fiesta WRC has been pushing on all the 19 stages and set some really good times.
– I’m very pleased to have been able to fight with Petter Solberg and Sébastien Loeb, at least in the beginning, and to take seconds from Mikko Hirvonen all the way through the event was great, he says.
Sunday morning started with problems with the engine and the duo had to drive with less power.
– We had to push really hard because we knew we were down on power. Overall I’m very happy with today’s results, especially because of the problems we experienced. This has been one of my best rallies, Østberg says.
– I’m very happy to show that even with engine problems we are able to keep high speed and can set some really good stage times.
The next event in the world championship is in France the first weekend of October.
